Citadel Securities says $9.6 trillion in US options notional expires on September 18. Every crypto outlet ran the number within hours. Almost none of them ran the second number, because the second number does not trend.
That number is delta-adjusted notional. On a typical large quarterly expiry, the economically live exposure — the contracts dealers actually have to hedge in spot, in real time, with real money — lands somewhere between 5% and 15% of the headline. Call it $500 billion to $1.2 trillion of dynamic, mechanically-forced flow.
That is still enormous. It is also several multiples smaller than the number in your feed. I have traded through four of these since 2017, and the pattern holds every time: the headline understates intraday noise and overstates systemic risk. Both errors are tradable.
I rebuilt the gamma map on my own sheets last week. The gap between what printed and what trades is the entire story. Anyone sizing positions off the headline alone is trading a press release.
Quad Witching. Third Friday of March, June, September, December. Index futures, index options, single-stock futures and single-stock options all settle on the same bell.
September 18 lands on the third Friday. That is why the number is what it is. Concentrated expirations concentrate hedging. Concentrated hedging concentrates volatility. This is not a mystery. It is plumbing, and plumbing has predictable failure points.
Here is the part that matters if you hold crypto. Crypto Briefing ran this story. A crypto publication, running a pure TradFi market-microstructure item. That tells you the transmission channel is already live in the newsroom, which means it is live in the order book. Risk-asset sentiment travels. Options expiry on the S&P bleeds into perpetual funding rates before it bleeds into your timeline.
There is a deeper reason this story landed on a crypto desk instead of a rates desk. Post-ETF, Bitcoin trades as a high-beta risk asset with a Wall Street wrapper. When SPX dealers are forced to rehedge into an expiry, they do not stop at equities. The same prime brokers finance crypto basis trades. The same vol desks quote BTC options. The plumbing is shared even where the narratives are not. That is why my 2024 skew work still matters: institutional rationality and retail emotion price the same underlying, and the gap between them is the alpha.
The mechanics are boring. The order flow is not. And the order flow in the final two hours of a Quad Witching has a mechanical sign that has nothing to do with anyone's opinion about anything.
Three things actually move during OpEx week. Notional is not one of them.
1. Dealer gamma sign.
Dealers — Citadel Securities, Susquehanna, Optiver, the usual crowd — sit on the other side of client flow. When clients sell options en masse, dealers go net long gamma. Their hedging becomes mean-reverting: sell into rips, buy into dips. Spot pins. Realized vol compresses into the expiry. Then the contracts die. Gamma goes to zero. The stabilizer disappears. The week after OpEx is historically where vol-of-vol shows up, because the mechanical anchor is gone and the market has to find its own level again.
When clients buy options instead — panic puts, upside lottery tickets — dealers go net short gamma. Hedging amplifies. Selloffs accelerate, rips squeeze. In that regime the same $9.6 trillion headline is genuinely dangerous, but for the opposite reason the headline implies.
Nobody in the article says which regime we are in. That is not an oversight. That is the trade.
2. Vanna and Charm.
Vanna is the change in delta with respect to implied vol. Charm is the change in delta with respect to time.
As expiry approaches, if implied vol drifts lower, dealers running long vega-and-gamma books must buy more spot to stay flat. That is Vanna flow. It is directional, it is non-sentimental, and it shows up as a slow grind nobody can explain in the moment. Charm does the same thing on a time axis. In the final two days, charm decay forces rehedging at a compressed clock. Together they are why the last 48 hours of a Quad Witching often look nothing like the four weeks before it.
I built this map in 2024 while pricing the CME-versus-spot Bitcoin IV skew at the desk. The arb was worth roughly $200k annualized. It existed because the same mechanical flows that move SPX options flow into crypto derivatives through market makers who quote both books. Same hands. Different tickers. The correlation is not sentiment. It is inventory.
3. The 0DTE layer.
Zero-days-to-expiry options are a structurally meaningful share of SPX volume now — often 45-55% of daily contracts on active sessions. On settlement day, same-day contracts stack on top of the monthly print.
Zero-dated gamma is entirely short-lived. There is no time for mean reversion to play out. Dealers hedge faster, spot moves harder, and the intraday range widens with no fundamental catalyst anywhere on the tape.
A single expiry day now contains more mechanical intraday volatility than a full week did in 2019. That is structural change, not seasonality.
The crypto side of this is measurable. Perpetual funding rates tend to drift toward the same sign as dealer gamma positioning in equities, with a lag of hours. Not clean causation — shared inventory. When SPX dealers sit long gamma and pin, risk appetite is stable and funding hovers near neutral. When gamma flips short and realized vol spikes, funding dislocates and leverage gets flushed. The signal is not the headline. It is the second derivative of the book.
Here is what the coverage gets wrong.
The headline treats a scheduled event as a shock. Everyone who needs to hedge for September 18 has known about September 18 for a year. It is on every desk calendar. The information is fully priced. An anticipated expiry cannot be a surprise; it can only be a liquidity event. Liquidity events are lethal only if you are the one crossing the spread at 3:55 PM with a position you cannot carry.
Second blind spot: the source. Citadel Securities is one of the largest options market makers on the planet. When the largest market maker publishes a report about the size of the market it makes, read it as a positioning statement, not a public service. That is not cynicism. That is market structure. Their book has a sign. The report does not.
Third blind spot: the unit. Notional is a marketing number. It sums the price of every contract regardless of whether the strike sits 2% or 20% from spot, regardless of whether the option is a covered call that will never be exercised, regardless of the side. Delta-weight it and the picture shrinks. Gamma-weight it and it shrinks again. The number that actually hits the tape on Friday is the smallest of the three, and it is the only one with a price tag attached.
I learned the shape of this in May 2022. I watched the Terra peg drain in real time on DexScreener. The numbers on the screen were arithmetic. The depth behind them was a rumor. I cut 60% of the position to preserve the remainder, and it was the correct trade. We trade the chart, but we survive the chaos. The chart said one thing. The book said another. The book won, every time, and every exploit is a lesson paid for in real time.
Crypto traders already own the analogue. Open interest, funding, basis — those are your gamma substitutes. Naked OI in a headline is the same lie as naked notional on the wire. Verify the depth, not the number.
So what do you actually watch into September 18.
Spot gamma flip level on SPX. If dealers are net long gamma above a strike band and short below, that line is the line. Price above it grinds. Price below it gaps.
The VIX term structure. Front-month premium to second-month into expiry means the market is pricing event risk. Flat or inverted means it thinks this is routine — and routine OpEx still releases gamma.
0DTE share on settlement day. Above 50% and the intraday tape is mechanically unstable. Below 40% and you are looking at ordinary chop.
And the T+1 through T+5 window. That is where the pin releases. That is where the volatility you did not pay for shows up, and where positioning mistakes get repriced.
None of my positions need September 18 to be a catastrophe or a non-event. Silence is the only edge left in the noise. The number is a lie. The flow behind it is not. Size for the flow.
